Derwent - Blender and Burnisher

Blender and Burnisher

Seamlessly blend colors or burnish layers to a polished finish

Colored pencil work gains depth and polish through deliberate blending and burnishing, techniques these specialized pencils handle without introducing unwanted color. The soft, colorless blender physically merges adjacent hues, smoothing individual strokes and hard edges into seamless gradations. Layer complementary colors, then work the blender across the boundary to create optical mixing effects impossible with premixed pigments alone.

The harder burnisher takes finished work further. Applied over established pigment layers, it compresses and polishes the surface, intensifying color saturation while creating that characteristic waxy sheen associated with professional colored pencil illustration. This pressure-based technique fills paper tooth completely, eliminating white specks and unifying your surface.

This set provides two of each pencil, practical for artists who blend and burnish regularly without wanting to interrupt flow for sharpening. The included eraser lifts pigment for corrections or highlights, while the sharpener maintains the precise points both techniques require. Botanical illustrators use these for smooth petal transitions; portrait artists rely on them for skin tone subtlety. You control whether colors remain distinct or merge completely based on pressure and application method.
